What does Axé mean?

Vital force, power of realisation and movement: a word spanning spiritual, cultural and everyday dimensions.

The word Axé comes from the Yorùbá àṣẹ and gathers ideas of vital force, authority and power of realisation - the potency that allows something to happen and transform.

Vital force and spiritual power

Axé is blessing and movement. It is present in people, elements of nature, consecrated objects, words, gestures and relationships.

A power that circulates

Axé is not static. It may be cultivated and transmitted through words, gestures, touch, rites, gatherings and conscious action, creating bonds among people, places, ancestors and forces of nature.

The power of the word

Speech also carries axé. When we name, greet, pray or express a wish, we set intention and potency in motion. Words therefore call for awareness.

Essence and practice

Axé cannot be reduced to one translation or a generic idea of positive energy. It is a power to be lived, cared for and shared. To say “Axé to you” is to wish someone strength, realisation and good paths.

Axé is life, movement and potency. Cultivate it, share it, spread it.
